How did you get into photography?
It was in 2009 when I acquired my very first digital SLR camera, but it took more than three years before I got more serious in it and took several photography workshops. I experimented with different genres initially and regularly joined photoshoots with different groups. But, in line with my love for travel, I eventually found my interest in landscape photography. I also gravitated towards long exposure black and white photography. During the period 2013 to 2016, I actively posted my works in several photography sites in Europe where my works got featured and recognized.

Why black and white minimalist?
I am simply drawn by the simplicity, the uncomplicated rendering of images. But in its simplicity, I find that there is more potential for drama, more potential for creating more compelling and intimate images. As a photographer, I can relate more with this genre as it provides calmness and relaxation in a fast-paced, increasingly complicated modern world. Also, the sense of timelessness created in long-exposure photography also resonates well with me.

How important are filters in your creative process?
Filters are very important in the type of photography I engage in. It enables me to capture that sense of timelessness with elements like the waters and sky. I’m happy with my newer NiSi filters as they have eliminated unwanted color casts and light leaks. As I don’t have advance skills in post-processing, it makes my life easier.

What are tips you can give to people who would like to try fine art photography?
For me, the most important thing is to develop a strong artistic vision. It is not easy - there is no teacher or workshop that can make you develop and create one. To illustrate, Pablo Picasso is not known for anything else except for his unique styles of cubism and surrealism, Manny Baldemor for his unique style of impressionism. Study the masters, but develop your own style. It may take a special kind of mentor who may be able to guide you but it is mostly up to you.

It is a long-term process. I am still working on mine! In the meantime, just enjoy what you are doing - like I do. No need to stress yourself. Go out and shoot!
